Last year, Peel Children’s Aid responded to over 11,000 calls about the safety and well-being of children from teachers, friends and concerned citizens and over 5,700 of those turned into investigations into child abuse and neglect. Peel Children’s Aid has a vision that ever child is cherished, and although there are over 135 loving foster families in Peel, the statistics about the future success of these children are startling. Foster children usually enter a home because of abuse or neglect, and are given a loving, stable environment to heal. Even with this environment, over half of these children will develop feeling of depression, hopelessness and worthlessness. An incredible 60% may develop symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), less than half will graduate high school, and 1 in every 4 will attempt suicide.

If we don`t show these children that life is amazing, that it`s worth living, that dreams really can come true, the vicious cycle will continue. It is not uncommon for foster children who grow up and later become parents to lose their children to foster homes as well. It will continue the cycle of abuse and neglect.
